Topography serves as the canvas for an innovative 350 m² home in Oeiras, Portugal, merging design with nature.
Set on a sloping site in Oeiras, Portugal, this 350-square-metre residence transforms the challenges of its terrain into opportunities. Guided by the philosophy of “topography as the raw material of the architectural object,” the design adapts seamlessly to its environment while reimagining domestic living.
The architects skilfully integrate natural and artificial elements, creating a central patio that regulates light and organizes space. This void anchors the house, connecting its three sides—a social zone, an individual zone, and the entrance—via transparent spatial links. A scenic water feature offsets the half-buried entrance patio, enhancing light and visual appeal.
The sloping site, initially perceived as a constraint, informs the structure’s geometry. Dense yet dynamic, the home appears to levitate, allowing vegetation to weave through and around the structure. The roof, shaped by the terrain, serves as an accessible, multi-functional extension of the living space, blurring the boundary between architecture and landscape.
Sustainability drives material choices, with careful attention to blending the built environment with its surroundings. The use of natural finishes reinforces the home’s connection to the site, while rational design ensures spatial efficiency. Diagonal movements and layered transparencies further enrich the narrative of the house, emphasising continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces.
In this design, the architecture does more than adapt; it transforms the site into a cohesive whole, enriching the environment with stability, functionality, and beauty.
