Ar. Anuja Marudgan’s home is a testament to inclusivity, meticulously crafted for her wheelchair-bound mother. The residence highlights Ikigai Studio’s expertise in functional, contemporary design.
The design journey commences with an open-plan layout, where the absence of physical and visual barriers fosters an environment that seamlessly blends formal and informal living spaces. The living area exudes modern charm, with a colour palette dominated by sophisticated shades of grey and brown, accentuated by subtle hints of gold. A striking TV backdrop takes centre stage, adorned with captivating chevron gold artistry, harmonizing with the veined marble flooring. Every piece of furniture is carefully selected to ensure comfort and ease, aligning with the ergonomic requirements of the wheelchair.
A sprawling balcony treats you to breathtaking vistas while a modern, uncluttered dining area and mandir enhance the overall allure of the interiors. Incorporating inclusivity, the architect ingeniously designs a playful kitchen with pull-out faucets and cutting boards to enhance functionality and ease for her mother. Snow-grey cupboards enliven the space, infusing it with youthful exuberance, while delightful white tile accents provide a charming contrast.
The private quarters of the home continue the contemporary aesthetic – the material palette ranging from minimal yet stylish wallpaper, exquisite leather-panelling, and fluted veneer, to wainscotted walls, and marble backsplash exuding quiet, understated drama. Modernity comes into play with a wine-coloured headboard, brass-finished side tables and complementary wall sconces. The amalgamation of wooden flooring and leather-finished furnishings creates a delightful tapestry of textures.
Ikigai Studio showcases its expertise not only in the interior design of this residence but also in its commitment to inclusivity for individuals with special needs. Well-placed switchboards at wheelchair-accessible heights and consideration of every design element underscore the primary principles of ease, comfort, and functionality, culminating in a space of empowerment and independence – an innate respect for life and living.
