MVRDV Launches CarbonSpace – A Free Embodied Carbon Design Tool

MVRDV launches CarbonSpace – a free embodied carbon design tool

Free tool helps architects design with embodied carbon from day one!

Despite contributing nearly 39% of global carbon emissions, the building industry struggles to reduce embodied carbon, hindered by detailed models, precise data, and complex, paywalled tools that delay actionable insights. Addressing this gap, MVRDV launches CarbonSpace, a free, web-based tool developed by MVRDV NEXT with Studio AvW, empowering architects worldwide to assess and reduce embodied carbon from the very first sketch—regardless of project scale.

Using rough estimates of floor area, façade, or volume, the tool provides instant feedback on the carbon impact of design choices. Built on a transparent, simplified version of Germany’s Ökobaudat database, it enables easy comparisons between materials, systems, and structures to guide low-carbon decisions early on. Compatible with Rhino, Revit, and Power BI, CarbonSpace integrates seamlessly into design workflows, making carbon-conscious design accessible, fast, and actionable for every project. Access it free at carbonspace.earth.
