Studio Modijefsky designs Arie – a ‘brown’ bar that pays tribute to the post-World War II days of incessant cigar and cigarette smoke that discoloured the walls of bars and cafes… The building in which Arie is housed dates to 1876. Its street-corner location is reminiscent of bustling home-grown bars and cafés that welcomed generations of Amsterdammers in the post-war days and got their name from their discoloured walls – an aspect that is revived here by using stained wooden panelling.
