Our focus this week is on the marriage of technology and engineering in architecture. Hitherto complex processes, complicated design features… challenges that inspired, pushed, even surpassed great hurdles to live triumphantly thereafter, continue their measure of excitement and pizzazz – albeit, in a different avatar. The rush of adrenaline that a design challenge brings is now probably doubled as the challenge is further challenged by the use of appropriate technology. We speak of computational design that is increasingly becoming an inevitable part of everyday design. Whether it is the very complex revolving solar sail bridge design by Ar. Margot Krasojević or a simple beautifying intervention in the facade by ratLAB, the strong precedent here is that with the computer-assist program, the advantages stand loftily apart. So, are we progressing to newer ways of channeling our creative pursuits? Or is it just the simple old adage, ‘what goes around, comes around’ making a conscious comeback?
